Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Autism Therapy – a new hope
As April is an Autism month, today we will focus on it and discuss a new, available treatment method.
What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder may refer to a wide range of conditions, mostly connected with challenges in speech, social skills and behaviours, nonverbal communications and other unique features. There are many “faces” of autism, each of them caused by different factors such as genetic basis, influenced by environment, medicines taken during pregnancy (also heavy metals, antidepressants pesticides and immunizations containing mercury: measles, mumps and rubella) and many more. What we know is that the person with autism has damaged these brain areas, which regulate memory, concentration, attention and speech.
First signs which may lead us to autism diagnosis tend to appear in children between 2 and 3 years old, sometimes even earlier.
How is Autism treated?
Nowadays the most popular methods of autism spectrum disorder therapy are proper diet, behavioral therapies, Holding therapy, small steps therapy, TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children), RDI (Relationship Development Intervention), Sensoric integration. Many children are also prescribed psychoactive drugs, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, hyperbaric oxygen or anticonvulsants.
New hope – mesenchymal stem cells therapy in Autism
Stem Cell Therapy in Autism is based on the unique ability of mesenchymal stem cells to restore damaged cells and tissues. These wonderful cells acquired from the Wharton’s Jelly are able also to influence immune system and metabolism. The oxygen and blood flow to the brain cause the replacement of damaged neurons by new ones, cells are multiplying and it results in grey matter restoration. Thanks to this therapy and improved perfusion, the neurologic symptoms are reduced and intellectual capacity is improved.
By now this kind of therapy is not available in many countries. In Europe, some governments abandon growing and keeping human body tissues, and as this treatment is still in the phase of clinical research, it is not allowed. However, there are some institutions, which has received the licence and certification for this particular stem cells growing and banking.
